How To Make Cheap Cosplay Gears For Halloween

Ready your favorite characters as you portray them in their amazing gears. Purchasing a gear costume for Halloween can cost up to $20 to $50 or more. You do not need to spend a lot of money just to get an expensive gear. But making your own costume can lessen your expenses.

You only need to make use of some creativity and resourcefulness to come up with a cheap but fine-looking cosplay gear. With applying some spooky elements, it could come out as a decent Halloween costume.

Things You Will Need

• Ballpen
• Marker
• Copper/plastic pipe offcuts
• Cardboard
• Thick foam board/insulation small (airline size)
• Toiletries bottle
• Scotch tape
• Glue
• Tape
• Glue gun 
• Glue sticks
• Wood glue
• Black paint (acrylic or blk spray paint)
• Silver paint
• Red paint (acrylic)
• Ruler
• Paper
• Chopsticks
• Glow sticks
• Scissors

#1 - Be Artistic

Choose a character you want to portray and search for a copy or picture of the gear/costume. Gather the source materials (such as pictures from magazines, internet or books). Scale to the size that you wanted, preferably the one that will fit you. Use a grid system to get the measurements and highlight the edges you want to cut. Next, trace this in a cardboard or foam board and cut it out.

#2 - Laminate The Cardboard Weapon You Will Make

If you want to time and energy, use a foam insulation. This serves as the central core, but if you do not have one it’s still okay. Just continue to add slices until you feel that the main bulk’s right. You can use two layers to the side of the foam to stick it. Use a glue gun for this.

Start adding the details or designs like the panel on the round portions in the front and middle. Fix the edges and glue it to avoid splitting up. For example, you want to make a chainsaw all you need to do is cut as many triangles as possible. Then, stuck for like 4 triangles together at the same time.

Get ready to do the body of the gun and add small details around it after finishing the gun’s body, the designs that you want or the one you want to portray.

#3 - Paint The Costumes

With the armor and the gun, you can now paint it. Do undercoating and prime. Dry brush it in silver. Do this 3-4 times until you satisfied yourself in covering the areas.

#4 - Making A Body Armor

Use a skeletal framework as a base in designing your armor. Then start building it using the shaped cardboard. You can use two foam board to highlight the front and the back. But if you do not have then use cardboard instead.

#5 - Making The Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Head Gear

• Put on a hat

You can choose a cap or a helmet depending on your preference. Take a cap or a helmet to use for the costume.

• Paint the cap or helmet

In case your cap or helmet is not color black, paint it with a black spray paint. Put a face mask while applying it. Dry for hours before you proceed to the next step.

• Add a chin strap

If you preferred to use a helmet then you might want to put something on it like a chin strap to the bottom.

• Cut a piece of black thin cloth stretchable or long enough to extend from ear to ear. Put it on the bottom of the helmet and your chin.

• Tape the tail on both ends to the helmet’s bottom about the point of where your ears. Adjust the distance if it loose or too tighten

• Wear eye coverings from at home or from a shop

• To form the SWAT costume you can use a visor, sunglasses or goggles.

Buy a black frame sunglasses at a store or shop instead of making them on your own. Avoid designer and prescription brands.

#6 - Paint The Sunglasses

If your glasses were not completely black, paint them or use a black marker to cover up those non-black areas. Be careful not to mark or paint the lenses if you do not want it to become unusable. Cover the lenses with a masking tape to ensure it will not get marks.

#7 – Set-Up Goggles Or A Visor

Use those what welders and mechanics as possible. It might be available in your house. But if you do not own one, you can borrow from a neighbor or your friends. If you cannot find or borrow you can just buy for they are inexpensive.

#8 - Fasten The Goggles Or Visor Correctly

It must rest on top of your helmet or hat fix on your helmet without it falling. You can tape some string to the earpieces of visor, sunglasses, and goggles. Cut a bit of a thick yarn or a nylon string. It must extend enough between the back of the earpieces of the eyewear you choose. It must wrap around the hat or helmet and the back of your head.

Put some extra or excess string for you to tie the ends of the earpieces. Leave a small loose to make the eye wear movable.

#9 - Plug Your Ears

Stimulate a radio contact on an earpiece to enjoy yourself while parading your Halloween gear costume. Black earphones can work out on your black outfit. Coil a black wire on the back of your vest to be set up later. To make it look like a corkscrew, twist the string. Use a black electrical tape to attach the end of the wires between the plastic backing of the earpiece and back of the vest.

#10 - Apply Black Glare Eye Color

You can optionally put black lenses to enhance your overall look as a field operative. You can buy it on sporting goods store. Put it using your fingers, below your eyes.

#11 - Apply Camouflage Face Paint

Put a black and green combination to make a camouflage look on your face. Apply the paint carefully on your face skin (cheeks, forehead, and chin) using your hands or a makeup applicator.

#12 - Assembling The SWAT Body Gear

• Put on an undershirt that you can comfortably wear. It can be a long or short sleeve shirt.
• Pick an undershirt without a logo or print, colored in dark blue or black. To blend your camouflage color.
• Pick a vest. Fasten the vest properly. Not too loose nor tight.
• Cover your elbows and knees. Coverings add up to your overall get up. Skateboard or black bicycle pads can do, but make sure to wear only uniform colors as to your costume.
• Wear ankle and ankle pads.
• Put right black pants for your finishing overall look.
